National Seminar
The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute national training seminars are designed for the individuals who will be delivering the curriculum to young people in communities across America. Only individuals who attend a training seminar are "certified" to conduct the Institute. Two individuals from the same community are encouraged to attend the training seminar together. If you are interested in bringing a high school student, who would serve as your co-trainer when you conduct the Institute locally, they must meet the same criteria as the adult participants. They must have previous experience training, facilitating or teaching high school age students. When conducting the Institute locally, there must be a certified adult trainer present during all curriculum modules.

In addition to national seminars, we can also conduct regional training seminars for specific organizations or communities. If you are interested in receiving information on how you can host a regional training seminar, please contact us.

The PYLI Train-the-Trainer program is currently on hiatus. Please check back for upcoming dates.

Cost
The cost of attending a national training seminar is $550 plus travel and hotel accommodations. The training is $450 for a second attendee from the same organization. This fee includes breakfast, lunch and snacks. Special hotel rates are also available.

Expectations and Objectives of the Training Seminar
Participants are expected to attend the entire three-and-one-half days and participate fully in all activities. The training is extremely experiential and interactive; lectures are kept to a minimum. Most importantly, participants must be prepared to challenge themselves, meet new people and have fun. Following are the objectives of the training:

  • Participants will have an understanding of The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute, including the national sponsors, on-going support and trainer expectations.
  • Participants will be able to implement the components required to conduct an Institute and will understand certified trainer requirements.
  • Participants will understand the Creative Leadership Process and how it relates to community service for young people.
  • Participants will be able to deliver the required curriculum modules to high school students.
  • Participants will develop collegial relationships with others in the field.

Learning the Curriculum
The curriculum is a combination of 17 teaching modules and 10 experiential activities. The best way to learn the curriculum is to experience it. Throughout the training seminar, participants are asked to wear two hats 1) "participant" and 2) "trainer". Individuals will participate in many of the experiential activities and the teaching modules as "participants"-experiencing it, as the young people would. Each activity or module is debriefed as "participants," and then as "trainers."

Implementing the Institute
In addition to learning the curriculum, participants will learn how to implement the Institute. Some of the areas include: selecting a co-trainer, developing a planning committee, creating a Community Advisory Council, developing a budget, recruiting a local Prudential representative, recruiting and selecting participants, promoting the Institute, planning the community service project and planning the graduation ceremony.

Application Process
Individuals must submit an application to attend the training seminar, explaining their plans for implementation and their training experience. You may apply online.
